Email management (and email archiving) in universities and colleges have two major challenges.

Firstly to supply a robust, well managed service to the administrators and faculty staff. These range from administrators, lecturers, research staff, professors, ….. The

Second are the students, there can be many thousands of these. And they are transitory, usually 3 years and they are gone. With no need to retain anything they do beyond the period they are there. To them the IT staff are trying to provide a service of giving them email access and little more. With a college/university of 30,000 students, the IT staff could be faced with adding 10,000 mailboxes in a matter of days when the students start, and deleting another 10,000 every year when a year graduates.

Two different profiles of people to manage.

And of course universities are not cash rich, usually operating on very tight budgets.

Email management needs to cater for these scenarios. It is probably perfectly valid to limit students mailboxes to a certain size, but for professors and research staff you would want large mailbox quotas.

Email archiving vendors need to be flexible with the way they support these organisations and experienced in working with them.
